The deal, which opened from July 15 to 17, was jointly offered by Taobao and KingMed Diagnostics, China’s biggest third-party medical laboratory group, China Daily reported Wednesday.

During the same period, Taobao had received some 137 applications for paternity tests while 4,060 people were seeking sperm fertility testing through the platform.

The English daily said a total of 22,017 men had signed up for sperm donations at one of seven sperm banks nationwide within 72 hours, in which 69% of the donors were from Beijing, Shanghai and Guangzhou.

To avoid embarrassment, donors would only have to provide their name, ID number and email address for registration; each of them would receive a subsidy between 3,000 and 5,000 yuan  following their donation, it said, adding it took about ten working days to receive the result.

The paternity testing services provided by Taobao cost 699 yuan for each person, which is much lower than the average cost of about 4,000 yuan , the report said.

China Daily said the project was the first attempt at O2O (Online to Offline) business by Alibaba Health Information Technology Limited. Taobao is owed by Alibaba group
